I have been settled on the HD800 + Bottlehead Crack + Speedball combo for sometime now, which is great. However, occasionally I still want to enjoy the music without wearing headphones. So, I am looking for a pair of bookshelf speakers with amp combo that is kind of versatile.

Put the bulk of your budget towards the speakers, as that is where you will get the maximum benefit.

Look into Ascend Acoustics Sierra-1s. They currently have some b-stocks which would leave you money for an Emotiva mini-x. Or if you have a little play in your budget, some Philharmonitors are another good bookshelf to consider.

Thanks for the recommendations. I was leaning towards the mini-X a-100 for the amp since for the money it is really good and able to drive most bookshelves fine. The Philmonitor looks interesting, but doubt I can test those anywhere in person before buying right?

Right. Those two speaker manufacturers are Internet direct vendors.

Then you should just go to your local hi-fi shops and do some listening
