Hi guys,
I listen mostly to stuff like pink floyd,led zepplin,porcupine tree & i would like to know which headphones you recommend for around 100$.
Some of the stuff i have been considering are:
UE 6000 (heavy??)
ATH m50
AKG k240
Are there other better alternatives for 100$?

I will be using my pc or my smartphone(Galaxy Nexus) as the source.I don't have an amp (I guess I could get an amp if I can get headphones+amp for around 100$).

Check out the JVC HA-S500, $60 and the brand new HA-S680, $80.
 
An Asus Xonar DG (PCI) sound card is $27. Usually better then on-board Win PC audio.

I just got the UE6000 and I am returning them.
It's not that there bad but the memory foam ear cups put too much pressure on my glasses and resulted in a hot environment. They are also a closed style which my ears don't like due to air pressure levels. Didn't know that till I tried them on. However the white pair is on sale for $69.99 at tiger direct. At that price they are a worthy consideration and they did sound very good. When in active mode things got VERY loud music wise. However they DO weigh more than my other pairs of headphones and it did affect me slightly. I like my Superlux 681 evos more though and I am returing theses for a DT 990 Pro 250ohms.

If i get the Asus Xonar DG (PCI) do you think i can drive the HD 558,I have also been considering the HD 558 since the current price (130$)looks very attractive. Do you think these will be a better choice for the type of music i listen to?

The Xonar DG's headphone amplifier can easily drive the 50-Ohm Sennheiser HD558s.
The HD558s are the oldest headphones I have that I still like to use.
I think the HD558s are good to use for everything.
The audio from the HD558s is not very "warm", the term I like to use to describe it's sound is the word "functional", in a very German sort of way, there is nothing fancy about the sound, but it will be enough to get the job done.
Later on you might consider getting this cable (1.2m to 1.8m), it come standard with a 3.5mm jack.

but doesn't the impedance of the hd558 go upto 250+ at some frequencies?

that's not something you need to worry about.
 
i have the HD 558s and they don't even need an amp, i could drive them fine with my ipod touch.

That is what I've heard about the HD558, but I do not fully understand those audio graphs, so it's kind of hard for me to answer questions about them.

From what i could understand the graph means that if the soundcard cant drive a headphone with around 250Ohm ,the hd558 will loose some bass at the 100hz region.(not sure though...i could be totally wrong )

i think that graph is basically showing the fact that the HD 558 lacks bass in the 100hz area.
 
that can be improved by the foam mod though.
