I have only recently started looking into headphones and forums such as Head-fi. I listen to a large range of different music, from Metal to J-Pop. After looking around it seems the Audiotechnica M50's are one of the most esteemed entry level headphones, but I was wondering about any alternatives. My budget is around £200.

The M50s are extremely overrated and really aren't that great. I fail to realize why people praise it so much. Are you planning on using these headphones at home, and what kind of sonic signature do you like? Do you like thumpy headphones? Do you like mids with clear vocals, or do you want everything to be balanced? Your response will determine what kind will be recommended to you.
 
Not saying that they're bad nor am I saying that they're a bad value, I'm just saying that people give it too much praise in my opinion.

I want good isolation because I plan to use them on the bus and in libraries. I am would prefer everything to be balanced.
