I need some cheap, durable closed headphones with good sound for my dorm. Something to use when I don't want to disturb my roommate (I primarily listen with grados), or when he's making a lot of noise. Something around $70 or under would be ideal. Oh, and I want a full sized headphone, nothing like the PX200's because I think they'd be annoying for home listening.

Thanks in advance!

the sonys will be closer to the grados than the hd280's if you like the grado sound...

Okay, I'm going to do something I hate when others do it.

If you could stretch your budget to afford the Beyerdynamics DT250-70, you should. They are great phones and highly underrated. I have Grados and I have these Beyers. While they don't sound at all like the Grado sound, they are easy to go to after listening to the Grados.

Sorry about recommending a phone out of your budget.

I do like the grado sound, but sometimes I find it to be too bright. I've heard the same about the V6. How are they in this respect?

Also, are the beyer 250-270's excessively bassy? I had dt-770 's and found the bass to be too overpowering, while the rest of the sound wasn't very clear or analytical at all. How do the 250-270's compare?

The sony's CAN be bright and forward and some people like that. If you want o get away from that, you may want to check out some sennheisers, like the hd280s or the beyers/ I cant comment on the beyers having never heard them...

I bought my brother a pair of Beyer DT-231 for Christmas, they seem to work really well, and sound pretty great with all types of music.

I love my V6. IMO, they are pleasantly bright (not harsh) and very analytical cans with excellent, but not overpowering, bass response.

Interesting. Anyone else have any comments about the V6, 250-270, HD-280, or the DT-231? (Or new recommendations.)

If the 250-250's aren't out of reach, you may want to look into the HFI-650 Trackmasters. I just recently got my pair and they're simply amazing. They don't have overpowering bass but they have a relatively neutral sound that can be analytical, but remains sounding musical.

Raising your budget to fit the 250-250's and Trackmasters, there's a lot more options you can explore like the ATH A900's, K271S and so on.
Some of these cans will require amps though.
