I received DT990 Pro's today. Immediately when the music started I knew I wouldn't like them much. After few hours though I found them to be listenable with some of my music. Still, I won't be keeping them for too long.

These are the headphones I have listened, in order of preference:

1. AKG K240DF
2. Koss KSC75
3. Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro
4. Koss Porta Pro

I'm currently using: X-Fi XM -> Beresford TC-7510 -> Headfive.

I listen to a variety of music, I would say anything but heavy metal. Mainly electronic/ambient/alt and indie rock-pop/folk.

I need a bit more bass than KSC75's or K240DF's have, but DT990's and Porta Pro's are way too boomy and muddy for my tastes. I want clear mids and highs and a tight, well pronounced bass. Am I looking at K701 or some Grados maybe? Comfort is important, I might sit hours in front of my computer listening to music. That might count the Grados out...

Thanks!

Have you let the DT990 Pro burn in? I have the newer 2005 version (which most would say is more refined, by the way--matches your description) and it's tightened up after a good day or two of straight music burn in.

I had a similar experience with my '05 DT990s, the sound was ridiculous at first BASS BASS BASS and sssssssssibilant. Then it all went down in a few days. Now it's more of a V curve than a U curve.

Make sure you give those DT990 Pros a good burn in before chucking them out.

This is a used pair so I would believe the burn in period has passed already. By the way, the top of my head starts aching just a few minutes after I put the DT990 Pro's on. Does this mean I have a big head?

The DT990 Pro was known to have a tight clamp, so I guess it would be normal. I have a big head too

. The new DT990 or the less bassy DT880 would probably be great for you, though.

You sound more like a AKG person.....k601 or 701 is supposed to go well with the headfive. This is if the DT990 doesn't grow on you

Though supposedly some people find the 701 a bit on the uncomfortable side. Only way to know is to try it!

I have listened and compared my cans a bit more. The new preference order is: KSC75/DT990 Pro > K240DF > Porta Pro. Suddenly K240DF sounds really flat after DT990 Pro! I think I'll be moderately happy with these for a while.

Thanks for advice!
