recommend a "starter" set for a n00b

Replace all your music with FLACs/ALACs as archive with LAME V0 MP3s or OGG Q9s as portable source files. AAC MP4s at highest VBR setting works as well.
Now buy some Klipsch Image X10s. (Everything you mentioned pointed to this IEM)
If you don't want an IEM, go with the Ultrasone HFI-680/780 or Denon AH-D2000. Maybe the Beyerdynamic DT770 as a third choice here.
