As the title suggests, put in your vote for that 1 essential recording you believe everyone should own.

As for myself, I've been going on a rach PC marathon lately.

My vote goes to:

I know this will be a tough ordeal but please limit your suggestion to 1.

For those who audit classical music obsessively and should supplement with another genre's fibre, I recommend

"Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" performed by Leo Kottke, 6 & 12 String Guitar!

I'll continue the Rachmaninoff with my personal favorite--

My vote goes to Georg Solti's Decca recording of Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen.

This might be the greatest record of all time, to say nothing of classical. Everyone should own it, too, because it documents half of the most monumental single accomplishment in music (the drama part is hard to realize fully in the CD).

Probably "Yellow Shark" - Zappa

People need to open their minds more... truly amazing! I can understand not liking it, but I can't understand if you don't think Zappa was a very gifted composer!!

MFSL UHQR recording of Respighi's Feste Romane / The Pines of Rome with Lorin Maazel conducting the Cleveland Orchestra. Most impactful classical recording I've heard to date.
