DIY is never a problem. I don't believe nano or vision-W will be difficult to do signal tapping, might need a little magnification when soldering that is all. That is what the microscopes are for

5.5 with Rockbox is super! Battery life is not great though it's adequate for daily use!

Touch, I'd buy one now if it had more gb.

5.5g if you can get one. I listened to the 5.5g vs 6g stock and the 5.5g has better harmonics to me.

The 6g doesnt sound bad, but its more exhausting to my ears, less musical.

I have a Touch but it is getting almost no playtime nowadays. As a portable source it really is way too bulky (the size of a large cellphone + you really need a carrying case as the back scratches extremely easily). And yes, the sound quality is just OK, nothing to rave about. Since app store has rolled out I mostly use it as a gaming device! It's almost like a PSP slash Nintendo DS hybrid =]

FWIW, I have a Sansa Clip on the way that will serve me as a full-time mp3 player. And it cost me 10 times less than what I paid for the Touch =[
