Got a bunch of music in FLAC and I want to convert it to a more compressed file codec, any suggestions on a free converter and codec to be converted to?

Lossy? LAME for mp3 and oggenc for ogg. Those are encoders, which you can use through command line or through any frontend. foobar2000 can use those encoders, with either stock or custom parameters.
