Reccomendations for Excellent Headphones for Classical Music

If I were aiming around the $200 mark then I would be looking at a BabyStax rig, absolutely no question.

You face a different set of issues with the SR-001 than you do with the full size recommendations like the K501. You face fit issues (some people) but escape the amplification issue because the amp is included.

If you'd rather go with a moving-coil rather than a planar, then I would advise a look to the Ergo 2 before the K501 or K701 options (massively less amplification requirement, they'll sound awesome even from an iPod headphone jack or a soundcard) and don't suffer from the cloying diffuse shadow over the sound that most Sennheisers have (and which gets worse for any sennheiser with a 5 in the middle of its name).

The Koss A-250 would be another possibility, although they're a little trick to get hold of and I confess that I base that particular third order recommendation on that which I have read, for I have not heard them as of yet myself.

Interesting. Well, I'll look over these options for a bit, and I'll see what I'll get. I just wish that I had a place to actually listen to these things. But alas, there is no such thing in my area. I was visiting relatives in Germany this summer, and I saw places with headphones for listening all over the place! I wish I had time to have tried some out... I suppose that's the best way to choose some.

Thanks again!

The Ergo 2 is easy to get hold of

I've seen more A250s for sale here than Ergos and I've had a eBay search for the Ergos for a while and haven't seen any.

Another float recommendation would be the MB Quart QP85. I've never listened to mine unamped, so that may be an issue. Also, floats are as open as a headphone gets so if you need a closed headphone, the Ergos and QP85s are not for you.

You might be able to find Beyer DT880 for less than $200 used, especially the 2003 version. An amp would be beneficial, but you could start with something cheap as a first step (like a CMoy) and later upgrade.

Hi!

I have a pair of DT880 '03, and I dont think they are "the best" for classical... .. and yes, they are hell hard to feed!

Cheers
