Well after using my Sennheiser Hd-280's for about a year for gaming and rap/hip-hop music I've decided I would like to upgrade. I have been looking at either the Dt 770/80's or the ATH-A900's or maybe one of the Sennheiser phones. I listen to 95% hip-hop music and play video games all the time. I need a can that will perform well in both. Also comfort is important so I wanted something circumaural. My price range is up to about $230. But I already have a super mini moy amp. PS I don't wanna make a new thread for this but is the Chaintech AV-710 fine for 2 channel computer gaming? Sorry if this seems like a lot so I'll kind of sum it up again:

-Must be good at hiphop (deltron, brother ali, people under the stairs, nas, etc) and gaming
- have about $230 to spend
-should be circumaural
-i have an amp

thank you

DT770/80 is a perfect choice. I use them for the same two things.

The placement they provide playing Far Cry is irreplaceable and the bass is perfect for explosions and gunfire.

It's fine, but it does leave something to be desired. You'll get very general left, right, and back positioning. Hardware performance is okay...your game might crash every once in a while because of sound issue with av710. If you're on a tight budget a basic Audigy 2 would be a whole lot better, and the FPS will go up.

hrmm so many different options still :/ would a av-710 and onboard sound for gaming be better than just the av-710 for everything? and for the headphones. are the dt 770/80's better at hiphop music than the a900's? and how are the hd595's for bass and clarity and all that? i'm just having a really hard time narrowing the whole range down for hip-hop / gaming phones.

Beyer DT770-80 Pros. I use them for hip hop duty and gaming use, just as you're intending, and they perform fantastically for both.

And wow, I can't believe someone else on these forums listens to People Under the Stairs! Cool ****, I must say.

I would take the ATH-A900's or Super-Fi's for Jack Johnson, but YMMV.

I say the best choice would be Super.fi EBs. Bass for rap and hip-hop and GREAT for gaming. I think these are your best choice.

I also enjoy the Grado sound for these purposes as well. I would say go for the SR-80's. They provide a good balance for what you are looking for.

NOT the Senn 595s for your purposes !! If you were a snob listening to 50% classical 30% Jazz 20% Tom Waits & Co I'd say go for them. But not for gaming & hiphop (Aargh). Head for Grados or the A900s or the 770s or whatever, but not for Senns (even not the HD25s).

Some folks here tend to suggest nothing but their preferred stuff w/o considering what the can is intended for. You want a sportscar and get suggested some family limousine.

alea35, I've owned the A900 and DT 770-80 and if you're not restricted to closed headphones, I would opt for the Sennheiser HD 580 (or HD 600), especially considering that you have an amp.

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the bands you mentioned (except for Nas). I sometimes listen to acts like Mos Def, the Roots or hybrids between hip hop and electronica or jazz.

The DT 770-80 still has the stronger bass and the A900 a slightly bigger soundstage but in overall terms, I would say that the HD 580 is the better headphone and more scaleable should you decide to upgrade your amp or soundcard in the future. The Sennheiser HD 580/600/650 line is very good for hip hop in my opinion and well-suited for movies and gaming. I also find it to be more comfortable than the A900 or DT 770-80 once you strech the headband a bit and it is less sweat-inducing, too.
