Hi guys,

I was extracting a sample from an Mp3 song which is at 204kbps VBR approx.
I set the Lame Encoder to record at 320 kbps.

What i want to know is that when re-recording mp3 to mp3..is there any more loss?

or is it better to record mp3 in WAV?

What i mean is that can a lossy format undergo more compression & more loss when re-recorded?

and re-encoding lossy to lossy will cause further loss in sound quality.

Yes, there will be additional loss. You will end up with a file that is a lower quality than the VBR mp3 and is 50% bigger.

Why do you want to do this in the first place?

Edit: Ah, I see that you're trying to extract a sample. If possible, save the sample as a .wav file or use FLAC. If that is not possible, Google for a program that will split MP3s without decoding and re-encoding.

If you're extracting a sample from an mp3, decode the whole file to Wav, open the Wav with your favourite audio editor (I use GoldWave) and highlight/save the sample back to wave.

Then you can do whatever you want with it.

Your new file will probably sound even worse than the source file, regardless of the higher bitrate.
Because it will use the audio data from the 204kbps source file, and apply lossy compression one more time. Leading to additional data loss.

Bad indeed!

Sounds like a very bad idea... A comparison would be to scale up a pixel-based image. The result would not be nice.

Google mp3directcut.

Short answer - it depends. An MP3 -> WAV should sound the exact same. But if you go MP3->WAV->MP3, the results will be horrible.

basically its like photocopying a photocopy but setting it to "fine" quality, it won't make a lick of difference and will only get worse.

204kbps vbr lame encodes are very decent, so don't worry about it.
if you must , rerip from the cd. but i doubt you could tell the difference.

Thanks guy...i will try to 'cut' it instead of re-encode.
