I am thinking of picking up a Rotel RCD-855 to use as a transport and use a Central Station as the DAC. I've done searches here, and don't see any comments as to the quality of the 855 as purely a transport, other than some posts that it is pretty quiet. Please let me know your opinions. Quick!

Thanks.

I don't know what the Central Station DAC is like, but if you check this thread

you will see that your Rotel CDP can be VASTLY improved by simple mods, and then you might not need to use a separate DAC at all.

The Rotel RCD-855 is a good machine if the transport side is still working and in good shape. The lens mech is the CDM4-19 swing arm - pretty good. But what makes this CDP really worthwhile is the fact that it uses the TDA-1541A chip! This is the famous chip that is used in several NOS (non over-sampling) DAC. It's pretty easy to convert it as all you need to do is swap out the lousy digital filter and drop in a NOS module. And do change those aging op-amps as well.

The NOS module I dropped in was this:

You are one lucky guy!

Here's a link to sgheadphones were most of the pictures for all the mods done to the Rotel can be seen

Have fun.
