"destroy them in the bass department" = better extension, resolution, and amplitude. not exactly shocking given that they cost over 10 times as much.
i'm not looking for bass quantity, but something closed with a pretty solid performance for all types of music. the xb500 i just decided to try out since they're cheap, and for the price i think they're quite respectable. i also tried out senn hd280, which were too uncomfortable for me. i'm currently splitting my home listening between the darths for rap/rock-type stuff and k701 for folk/acoustic/classical-oriented material. the denon fr-curve is attractive as a sort of bridge between those (particularly d5000).
It wouldn't be a bad choice. I'm personally not one to be using multiple headphones for different genres, I like to stick to one headphone for all my listening needs.
