Rank the best sounding daps that you heard

Honestly.. not sure why people are saying this. my wm1a sounded amazing with the dt990 pro 250 ohms, and that's out of the 3.5mm on 90volume.

I think the wm1a/z, especially hardware modded, can definitely pull off most most headphones unless they're seriously hard to drive or are planars, and usually those options are huge bulky open back.. in which case, might aswell get a desktop rig because you're not going outside with that on your head.
Key word is “demanding” headphone. Headphones on good desktop set up and DAP don’t perform on same level.
IEM not so much. IEM in general out of Bliss/Oor and out of DAP are more or less same. But plug in any Sennheiser or ZMF in Desktop amp and DAP and you will feel the difference.

Thats not true. Any of IEM I owned sounded better from Bliss with May than from the DAPs I had around. including N8ii and Dx320 Max. Deeper stage, more holography, more effortless presentation, sometimes more detail retrieval depending on the IEM. Its noticeable only in A/B testing, but still very much noticeable, the usual "once you heard it, you can unehear it".
Maybe its more of a Holo May thing than Bliss, but I suspect higher power headroom does its thing too.

I disagree. I've tried the hd650, 6xx, and 660s out of proper gear, be it a dac/amp, friend's mixing soundcard (universal audio apollo twin something) or a high quality vinyl system. The wm1a is definitely up there with the beyer dt990 pro 250ohms.

Hello head-fi fam,

I am super new to DAP's and Hi-Fi in general. I have been reading a few threads in the forum and kind of came up with a list.
Looking for something that is punchy, bass toned sound. I have some really budget IEM's for now that I will eventually upgrade.

My budget is around $400-$700 new or used.

FiiO M11 Plus (older Android version, not sold 100%)
HiBy R6 Pro II
iBasso DX170
iBasso DX240
Sony NW-ZX707 (JP model).
Sony NW-WM1AM2 (kinda too big, does this need to be JP version for high gain?)

Any other suggestions in that range?

Thanks in advance and your patience with my questions.

Punchy, bass toned sound? I'd suggest the Hiby R6 Gen III. Has Class A amp if you want to use that, and by using MSEB (I like it better then using EQ) and the DRX10K Dynamics plug-in, it lets you adjust to taste. Plenty of power for IEM's. I run my LCD-4's off of it. Can be found occasionally on sale for around $425 on Amazon.

The nice thing about people wanting to have new shiny toys: WM1Z can be found used for under $1000. Crazy.

I have collected too many players over the years seeking my end game - as many will know that is a quest very difficult to achieve

Been out of market for a few yrs but have been trying latest astell Kern, Sony and other top of line players To see if I can get better - to me some of older ones are still the best to my ears so have not retired the old ones yet

Only issue is most people prefer streaming and Bluetooth rather than wires and files

List below I still own - in order of what has had the most ear time or I gravitate to

Having said that all of these can still sound great with the right synergy of IEM or headphone

AR-M2
Calyx M
QP2R
Astell kern se100
Cayin N6 ii
Cowon Pleune M
Shanling M5- for line out
Pono player - for line out
AR-M20
Cowon Plenue M2
Dethonray DTR1
Colorfly U6
AK240
Sony ZX2
Cowon Plenue 1
QPR1
Shanling M5s
Cowon Plenue R and D & Iaudio
Cayin N3 pro
AR-M200
