Single Power PPX-6CG7 vs HeadRoom Desktop Millett Hybrid Amp

HD11.jpg

While the Millet is not a true Tube amp but a hybrid I thought a comparison to the only Tube amp at the meet was in order. The Desktop Millett is a fun amp. It comes with 3 sets of tubes so you can experiment with different sounds. The one I settled on as my favorite choice was the 12FK6. It sounded the best with the Jazz CD's I brought. I like to use Jazz for reviewing as it has a lot of different instruments that can easily be heard and separated. It's smooth and clean usually. At least the newer stuff. My favorite reference cd is Patricia Barber "Companion" Track 7-Company. Lots off stuff going on in this song.
If the Millett amp had a Dac option it would probably be the one I would get. While it did not have the Lush sound of the PPX3 it was a little bit warmer than all of the other Headroom gear. The output stage is still solid state but your audio signal passes thru the low voltage tube line stage and adds a bit of flavor to the sound. Me likeeee. This is a great way to get tube sound from a desktop computer and where space is limited.
But in comparing to the Single Power PPX3, if true tube sound is what you want and you have more room, then the PPX3 is the way to go. This is a hell of a deal for the price. This unit has the Solen Power Supply upgrade. I have not heard the regular version so I cant compare the differences. But the sound of this amp really goes well with my RS-1's. A great combination. Patricia Barber has a very sexy dark lush voice. And the the PPX goes hand and hand with it. On a bad amp her S's sound very harsh and brittle. I can usually rule out an amp with just this one thing. If the amp can not reproduce the S's without a krill sound then it isn't for me. The PPX had no problem with it. This gets my best bang for the buck award for the meet.

Why yes it is. It is my Do All reference player right now. Hell of a player for the price. I am very happy with the results. Video is outstanding especially using the HDMI. It upsamples the video. Plenty of outputs. Because it has 2 digital and 2 analog output sets I can run 2 systems of of 1 machine. A dedicated home theater and 2 channel setup. I love it. Cant recommend it enough.

I am actually impressed with these cans, although at their retail price and the fact they need an amp to sound good, you are probably better off getting the hd580 anyway. Which brings me to....

HD595 - now these are how I remember my hd555 sounding like. They are more neutral than the 555 and have less of a midrange hump. But the mids are seriously grainy here and this ruins the sound imo. I hear the same thing with the stock cable and also with the pair with the special cardas upgrade. Midrange performance is very important to me so a can that does poorly in this area is a real letdown. Get the hd555 instead.

Interesting. I wonder how many others share this opinion. I thought that the hd595 would be smoother and less grainy. I love my hd555 but I would not like it to sound MORE grainy.

I've heard the HD595 described as smoother than the HD555 by someone who owns both, actually. Unfortunately that's wasn't me.

Hi Guys! Sorry it took me so long to get these pix up---life on the road and all that.
Big thanks , of course, to Drew for the lush digs to have the meet in. I too enjoyed the pizza and lunch banter. But was particularly struck by the ease with which Drew totally settled into the gear and twisted knobs with a plum. (What?!)
Look, here Jeff is wondering whether Drew has reached his limit in the ability to stack up new HeadRoom product and twist knobs.

Here Jeff simply wonders whether he can read the psychedelic writing on the album cover without his glasses.

DHWilkin did exactly the right thing to do at a meet: he meditated on the music. Later he told me he was just thinking about another piece of pizza, but I think we should give him the benefit of the doubt.

vrao81 spent some time checking out the Desktop table. I have to say, I like the re-cabled HD595, too.

Here’s saturnine checking out his new BitHead on his comuter. I really wish I had taken a shot of the inside of his machine, it was real nice.

It’s funny, man, every meet some poor sucker decides to give the Bose a try. Yeah, they’re that bad.

Well, thanks again, Drew. Let me know when you want your very own amp to twiddle with. Look, Jeff’s still back there trying to read the record label.

i think kozlows is right. the blockhead upgrade was to a stepped attenuator, the item shown is the alps rk50 or something like that, which is not a stepped attenuator, just an insane potentiometer. i was looking at those last night and could not believe they actually cost more than my entire home setup, which is pretty damn nice anyways.
