Rat Shack sells a 40 watt soldering iron for about 10 dollars....is it anygood?

BTW, you know Cardas is now selling Caps (the electrical kind)....are they worth the incredibly expensive price?

I have the Radioshack 20/40W iron. It's usable, but not the greatest. Check the other thread that was up about a week ago about soldering irons.

Ratshack's irons definitely aren't unusable, but most people with experience with better equipment say they aren't very good quality. I'm fine with mine for now, or at least until the burnt-looking part spreads to the rest of the tip. I've had about 12 hrs of use with it heated up.

Hey,

I myself use RadioShack Iron with replaceable heater. The tip is ... poor. I think I use one up for one project session. (5~10 hours)

Weller SP series are pretty good. Weller's stations are good also. The key is the tip. Antex makes good ones too if you are in UK. Hakko units are widely available and probably more cost effective.

I am looking for Matcal's soldering station. It is better suited for things I do. (SMDs! Baby!) Iron stick feels like pencil.
