I finally got some 4556's and made an RA1 clone just for the heck of it, I must have made a mistake with the layout and I cannot see it, the problem is when I turn it on there is a fairley loud pop in the headphones, once thats over it actually sound really good but I don't like the pop on start up. Can anyone see what I've done wrong

any help appreciated

Centre tap batteries = you gets loud pop.

I thought the RA-1 uses Solens...

The pop is from the power rails coming up at different speeds. Very normal on battery powered amps that have no circuitry to prevent it.

Even an official review on Grado's site mentions it...

I think it did. Maybe he just wanted different caps. Solens don't seem to get the best rap in capacitor reviews.

The Solens have a specific sound and don't cost too much. Others are better but that point applies to everything here.

it cuts out nearly all the sharp popping noise its still there but very much muted, it doesn't seem to affect the sound quality
