A lot of the more recent active monitors I've been eyeing include Class D amplification, preceded by a digital / DSP crossover fed by an A/D converter. Some examples include the Dynaudio BM MKIII series, Eve Audio, and the JBL LSR305/308...and I'm sure there are far more.
In the case of the JBLs, the ADC in question is a Cirrus Logic 5341, which provides 24bit/192khz sigma-delta A/D conversion.
So this raises some interesting questions:
1. If using an active monitor with an A/D converter and DSP, does it make sense to invest in R2R DACs if it's going to through a sigma-delta conversion step at the end of the chain?
2. Regardless of chip topology, how much should one really invest in a DAC if the speakers are going to 'undo' it via A/D conversion and DSP processing of the signal, anyway?
