R10 vs 4070 vs K340
Jun 25, 2006 at 4:08 AM Post #2 of 16
I'm not familiar with the 4070, but the R10 is superior to the K340. I owned the K340, and I currently have an R10. BTW, the K340 is superior to the HD650 and RS-1, which I also owned.

I don't think that you can really say that. These two headphones sound completely different. Some will like the K340's and others will like the R10's. I think everyone knows which camp I belong to.

Yeah, but Philodox, if you're in the market for the R10's, I highly doubt the K340's are going to be on your radar.

Got to respectfully disagree with that one. I won't say one is objectively superior to another but I FAR preferred both the RS-1 and the HD650 over the K340. Not even close for me. Just proving for the umpbillionth time that it all comes down to taste.

Your loss.

I heard the R10's out of a SDS-XLR that had tubes specifically chosen for it. I still prefered my K340's by a large margin, though I can see why some love the R10.

Most definately.

EDIT: Though in this case I think it also proves the variability of the K340's sound. I've heard around 5-6 of them and they all sound different. Some I enjoy a lot more than others... though I can't say that I've heard one that I hated.

Not my loss, I found the sound I like

And we know you love your K340's...we really do, but someone willing to mate 2K+ headphones with another 5-7K+ in a source, amp, cables etc probably isn't going to be interested in the K340's.

I may be way off, since it's late, but I think some will agree.

edit: Sorry to derail the thread, continue with whatever it was ya'll be talkin' 'bout.

I should have said "IMO", but I hoped that it was understood.

I meant the 'proverbial you' in your story. Not you you.

I agree, and that is a sad thing in my mind. People should not be so focused on the cost of components and instead concetrate on their performance. I mean, I don't have any love for the HD650, but I am sure there are many out there who would consider them a 'top tier' headphone and worthy of building a system around it.

Indeed, a nice back end can do marvels for a lot of different headphones. Now that I've got a 120ohm adapter put together, my $75 DT831's sound pretty great from my multi-$k main rig

I guess I can imagine some people preferring a Porsche 996. And I can certainly understand those who would love a good Ducati between their legs.

But in my mind, I'd rather have the MacLaren F1.

It's not even close.

Best,

-Jason

Postscript: No, I haven't driven the F1. I have ridden more than a few Ducati and driven the 996 though...

I definitely prefer the RS-1 to the K340. I pretty much outright dislike the HD650, but the K340 does about as much for me as the HD650 thus far in my trials of it. It may edge ahead a bit, but it's definitely not my cup of tea. I'd take the R10 over the K340 for sure.

I've *only* listened to 3 K340s, though, so apparently that's not enough to make any determination about them because maybe I just got the wrong versions.

(I'm kidding, of course...or am I?

I compared the HD650 against the HD600 and chose the HD600. Having said that here is the order of the cans I currently have:

1)RS-1
2)K340
3)K701 stock battling it with HD600 w/ Headphile 1.5 meter Senn V2 (BlackSilver)

The above may change soon since I will send my K340 to Larry at Headphile for his magic touch and 2.0 meter BlackGold recable.
