Actually Lindy sent the news to me...He got it from CNN.com, but I also found it at Global Rhythm which is a great site for all things world music related. They have a good mag too, which comes with a cd. Found a lot of new tunes there.
I guess he had been ill for a long time. Sad stuff.
I'd post a link but I'm just not that pc literate...

ahh ok well thanks anyways yeah i know about the mag, there's also songlines etc

that is sad news, i know of Ali Farka through Ry Cooder, and his i love the music and the brotherhood lyric themes from what i hear so far. i will have to check out more of his personal works.

Sorry I missed this thread and sorry for the whole world who will now miss his amazing and soulful music. Not enough can be said about the power of his music, as well as his fellow countryman, Boubacar Traore.

I'm listening to his self-titled album now and am enjoying the sound immensely. I'm thinking of getting his "In the Heart of the Moon" next.

excellent album... he really sits back and lets Diabate shine. Savane is also a great record.

Indeed Ali Farka Toure is greatly missed.

Do get "In the Heart of the Moon" where he plays with Doumani Tiabate.

But in Ali's memory, also acquaint yourselves with the music of Ali's son,
Vieux Farka Toure, who has two or three (or more?) CDs out...

One is self titled "Vieux Farka Toure"
and most recent is called "Fondo."
These are both wonderful.

I'm a fan of Diabate as well, but for some reason I have not picked that album up. I will definitely check it out. Also the younger Toure. Thanks.
