Macbook with combo headphone / optical out

I am assuming there is a setting change required to enable an optical output?
I'd greatly appreciate if a mac user could enlighten me on the steps.

I think you just plug in an optical cable and it should work. If not, go to System Preferences > Sound > Output and then select the correct device.

Yes, just plug and play.
Mac OS X will detect that its hooked up to an optical connection and switch output device automatically.

You do need the miniTOSLINK adapter or cable.
