I have a chance to get one HD580, with a seller saying that is new. I asked if the box was sealed, he said that the boxes of the 580 are not sealed. Is that true?

I don't think the retail HD580 boxes were sealed but I could be wrong about that.

In any case if you have a chance to get even a "like new" used pair for anything under $200 I recommend doing it. At that price (and they can usually be had for less) they are a screaming bargain imo. Get a pair of HD600 grills (order from Sennheiser over the phone) and you'll have a headphone that looks as good as it sounds.

at ~$200, i'd start looking for used, good condition hd600's. unless the marble finish really offends you or something.

The HD580 and HD600 share the same driver so they perform almost identically.

And yes the faux-marble graphics offend me

I had previously had a NIB HD580 and they are not sealed boxes. It is just cardboard and mine had a sticker on it. The bigger test is the pads, whether they have crud on them and they should also be super stiff pads and rather clampy.
