Are the Beyer DT770, DT880, and DT990 pads all the same? I mean the cloth ones.

Thanks!

From Headsonic au.

Product Description
Spare Earpads for all models of Beyerdynamic DT880. Contains both a left and a right earpiece. Note that these are the soft silver velour versions, and that these are also suitable for the DT531, DT770 and DT990 series of headphones.

Okay but "suitable" is a very squishy word here. DT880 velour pads and DT770 velour pads are entirely different. And I know because I have both.

DT770 padsd are stiff and isolating. DT880 pads are soft and leaky. They suit their respective cans.

Wow. If the DT880 pads are that much softer than the DT770/80 I had, then they are softer than any pillow I've laid on =o

I Notice in the advert,

Beyerdynamic ear pads ( #926.679 ) for DT990 Pro/ DT880/DT880M/ DT880 pro/ DT811/ DT911/ DT931/ DT531, velour,pair, colour grey

There is no mention of 770.

The pads pictured are the ones that I put on a pair of Darths.
They transformed the sound.
I put it down to the fact they were new/soft whereas the old pads were worn and harder.[maybe washed to much].

No, the velour pads for the DT770/880/990 are not the same.
The woven glass fabric they're stuffed with, is quite different.

You can say the "rule" is to not use pads meant for closed phones on open headphones.
I tried pads from a DT770 on my DT990, and did not sound good.

It's easy to identify open or closed pads. Just look at the holes in the back of the pads. You can see the glass fabric through the holes. It's either black og white-ish. Unfortunately I don't remember which is which right now. :)

Huh?

All the beyer pads I've ever seen were stuffed with a torus of foam rubber.

Well, yeah "glass fabric" might be a little misleading. "Foam" is more suitable, but I know I've read/heard that glass is used in it.

By the way, have you ever opened one up?

Yes - I opened up and refoamed the pads that came with my 1st generation (1985-1999ish) DT990.

The foam donut in them had gone almost completely flat.

But the interesting part is that the foam was shaped to be slightly conical - the walls of the really old velours lean in toward the ear instead of standing up straight. They're identical to MB Quart velour earpads.
