Is there a way to get a line out from the player without having to buy the hub?

We have a dedicated thread for QP2R. You may find more help there. You can also use the 'search' feature while you are on the thread to find specific information.

Theoretically, QP2R supports USB C Audio Accessory Mode, but I suspect that Questyle have implemented some special handshaking to make it particularly difficult to extract line-out using 'normal' usb c audio adapter cables. I've bought cables from Sony, Trilink, ArkTek and a couple more 'no-name' brands and none of them work; if you find one that does, let me know.
