I'll receive my Questyle M15i this Friday and need a longer cable to my PC.

Now the question is, do I still need an OTG USB-C cable? They sell one that explicitly says USB-C to USB-C OTG cable at 1.8 meters length.

I thought with USB-C that wasn't a thing anymore? Is this just marketing BS?

Which USB-C cable should I get (2.0, 3.0, 3.1 or 4) and does the regular DAC rule from my personal experience of connection issues of under 2 meters as well?

If it is connected to PC, any up to normal USB standard Type C cable will do, no need for OTG. OTG is only required for mobile OS, not for desktop OS. Actually most smartphones released in last few years will be fine without an OTG cable as well. Audio only required USB2.0.

P/S: OTG means On-The-Go.

Should I get a standard USBC or one with charging specs at 1.8 meters length?

So their USB-C OTG cable is overpriced marketing nonesense?
OTG was necessary when mobile OS wasn't as powerful as it is now. Early smartphones didn't have the processing power as we have now, so a lot of drivers can't be included, including a full fledge USB driver that can automatic detect what devices were connected to the smartphone (while every PC's OS around two decades ago already have it). The solution to that problem was to implement a hardware (basically a resistor between two pins ) that the mobile OS can detect and understand that the connected device need OTG function. But these days our smartphones is just about as powerful as a (lower end) PC and so OS can run a lot more function thus making OTG unnecessary.

Gotcha but don't the USB-C specifications of switching back and forth between the roles of host and devices automatically support that? I mean, Questyle calling a USB-C cable OTG, isn't that misleading and simply wrong?

So my base Galaxy S23 with 256 GB will run the M15i with any USB-C 2.0 cable properly? Also supply enough voltage to operate the headphone amp sufficiently?

Calling the Type-C cable 'OTG' is probably an old habit, as people kinda used to the term denotes that it will work on smartphones. It is not that different that Sony wants to refer to all their DAP as 'walkman', even though they don't use cassette anymore.

I don't use Samsung so I can't say in certain (sometimes manufacturers do strange thing). But my Sony Xperia 1 VI will fully power any USB audio dongle without any issue. Last I recalled Questyle's dongle usually don't require that much power, so you should be fine.

You don't necessarily need an OTG USB-C cable to connect your Questyle M15i to your PC, as standard USB-C cables should work fine. OTG functionality is mainly for connecting devices like smartphones to peripherals. For your needs, a USB 3.0 or higher cable is recommended to ensure good data transfer speeds, especially for high-resolution audio. Regarding length, while the general advice is to keep cables under 2 meters to avoid signal degradation, high-quality USB-C cables can often handle longer distances without significant issues. Just ensure you purchase from a reputable brand to avoid potential connectivity problems.

Only thing I know is that you don't need more than USB 2.0.

One reviewer mentioned he can't connect it via a regular USB-C to USB-C to either his Computer or smartphone without an OTG adapter but a USB-C to A cable works.

Would I be able to use an Anker charging labeled USB 2.0 cable to connect the dongle to my phone? Such as these:

https://amzn.eu/d/izO3e8I

What is weird is that people do have issues with it, even on Computers where a reviewer showed me that non of his USB-C cables worked unless he used an OTG stick:

Without adapter not connecting

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DHIKoWis0i_uQRjrjlLRY_w4jTLTC52B/view?usp=drivesdk

With OTG adapter it lights up

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DAruFm37TbkDvdIIfyfb1zE0y1lGmdji/view?usp=drivesdk

Maybe in order to have a cable be able to do that you need something Bi-Wire capable such as a Thunderbolt or USB4 cable?

And regular 2 and 3 won't work?

I got curious and just tried using a regular 1M USB-C cable (one that came with my phone charger) to connect iPhone 16 to my M15 (not i) and it worked like a charm!
Previously with my iPhone 14, I had to use the short included lighting-to-C cable... Otherwise it wouldn't work.
