- I'm considering to purchase one of these. I'd be thankful if you could tell me whether the unit displays somewhere (browsing inside or on the instructions-warranty leaflet) the device's MAC number to allow it accessing the Wifi router in my home network. I have the router restricted for only known MAC numbers, so knowing it would be necessary to have it properly configured.

- Does the included dock base have an analogue line-out? If so, have you compared its SQ to the headphones out?

- If you happen to own a Nano or Classic too, is Touch's HP out sound quality any different, for the better or the worse, from the other iPods?

Thanks for reading. Regards.

The Touch's headphone out is better than my 3-gen Nano's.

1. MAC Address-- I believe so. If the MAC address is this format 00:6E:9G:12:... then yes under Settings > General > About. Even so-- you could temporarily open up your wi-fi, allow the touch to connect and then get the MAC address from your wi-fi router.

2. I did not know there was an included docking station. I am using my 5.5 iPod docking station with the touch so perhaps another head-fier can answer. The 5.5 is compatible and have line out capabilities.

If you are referring to the line out within the touch then the SQ should always be better via line out; however the headphones out is very good. The closeness in SQ between line out and headphones out on the touch is much closer than in prior models.

3. Definitely different. I own 5.5, Nano and touch. Better, worse??? hmmm. thinking... thinking...

different and I prefer the touch for all music forms. but I need to listen some more with my new IEMs. I will let you know.

There are many threads on the topic of touch SQ compared to other iPod models.

I can speak for the iPhone which is similar to the touch. The MAC address can be found under settings - general - about - Wi-Fi Address.

The dock that came with the iPhone does have a line out.

I have a few of the 4 GB disk based ipod minis. The iPhone headphone out sounds better to me than the older generation mini's headphone out.

Are you sure? At the Apple Store Touch's page this is what they list as included in the package:

What’s in the box
• iPod touch
• Earphones
• USB 2.0 cable
Dock adapter
• Polishing cloth
• Stand
• Quick Start guide

Maybe it's just an adapter for the USB cable and has no line-out nor other connections. Hence my question. I might check it before buying at any shop anyway.

To the rest of posters, thanks a lot for your informative replies and smart suggestions to catch the MAC.

The Touch is the most expensive of the DAPs I've been considering, but if it offers better SQ than a Nano -which I consider good enough- from the HP out, has the Wifi access which I might take some profit of, it's very worth considering.

I had thought of getting a 8Gb flash player for the commuting and short trips listening, and a big Classic for holidays and longer trips, but a 32Gb Touch is big enough to keep music for the whole holidays or any long trip, and would cost more or less the same than buying two players... Maybe it's the wisest choice.

Oh, I've recalled another pair of questions:

Is it possible to switch off the wifi connection to get longer battery life? How much is the longest battery life you can expect after a full charge?

Thanks again. Regards

Yes you can turn off the wifi feature in the settings menu.

Apple says something like 20 hours of music playback without wifi. I've never tested it since I charge it up everyday and use it with and without wifi during the day.

It's a slick piece of kit.

That is an adaptor to make the touch fit the standard apple dock (separate purchase).

Oh I see. Is this needed to use any aftermarket LODs too, or you have to order the LOD specifically to fit Touch?

No, the touch uses the same doc connector as all other iPods since the 3rd gen iPod. The Doc adapter is a piece of molded plastic that you insert into the apple dock to insure the iPod fits properly. Since different iPod have different thicknesses and widths. Any LOD will work with the Touch as far as audio output is concerned....video output, I'm not sure. Most vendors are pretty good at identifying which versions of the ipod their products work with.

I believe all of your questions have been answered. Let me add that I also like the sound quality of the Touch both from the headphone out (usually with iems or SR60s) and from the same LOD I use with my 5.5 30G iPod (D1000s and ES7s). It's an excellent device which will only get better with the new software coming this summer.

Mooch

Here's a photo of my portable rig with the iPod Touch connected with my ALO LOD.
With the case on, it won't fit in a standard Apple dock, though.

Hope this answers your question.

I also would like to add That I am very pleased with the SQ of the Touch as well.
