Just a simple question:

Are the W1000's physically larger than the W100's? I noticed that LT mentioned that the A1000's are significantly larger than the A100ti's, and I was wondering if the woodies got larger too.

Okay. So I'll ask it this way: Is the W2002 physically larger than the W100?

Give it a couple of days and you should be able to answer your own question.

Okay, so it's a little bigger. How much bigger? Basically, I'm looking for a measurement of the housing diameter. The W100's are already somewhat large phones, and I'm not sure I want something significantly larger like the CD3000's.

They won't be any larger as such. The cups are much flatter in profile so you won't feel any significant difference in size. In terms of stickyoutness the W100's are much worse. I don't know how big a CD3000 is but it's not going to be any bigger than a CD1700.

Kubernetes,

W2002 and W1000 should have enclosures of the exact same size. KurtW, who owns both, has posted a picture of W2002s and W100s side by side maybe half a year ago. It seems the diameter of the enclosure is exactly identical but because of the more spherical shape of the W100, its protrusion is bigger. I have listened to a CD3000 once and I somehow remember it to be larger than both ATs. I still have KurtW's side by side photograph of the W2002 and W100. It's a jpg with 100KB. PM me with your email address if you like and I'll send it to you.

The diameter of the magnesium rings holding the housings are identical for the W100 and W1000. Due to the dome shape of the W100, it does protrude out a bit more than the W1000. However, I suspect the W1000 has a bit more internal volume because of its flat and even profile across the entire surface despite not protruding as much as the W1000. It is also 30g heavier and seems to have a tighter headband at the moment than the W100 but this will probably change with normal stretching when worn on your head. The Asadazakura wood on the W1000 seems either lighter or thinner than the W100 wood.

The earpads on the W100 are softer but heat up twice as quick as the W1000's synthetic leather pads. The texture is also better and I feel that it gives a firmer/better overall sensation than the pads from the W100. The W1000 has been burnt in for over 50hrs at the moment. I will post some early comparative impressions of the W1000 to the W100 later for those still sitting on the fence regarding the W1000s

never seen the W100/1000 earcups though..but I'd expect them to be similar in size to the AT100Ti..

Admittedly, those Sony CD3Ks are huge!! NEver seen another set of cans that were larger!! They must be close to 3" each from the ear piece to the outside extreme of the cans. In spite of this they are very comfortable!! The weight is hardly noticable, and they seem quite light when worn!! Whatever Sony did with these things, IT WORKS!! They sound quite lively and have a big soundstage.
