Apologies if this has be asked before,

Trying to figure out the best way to get 3d like sound from the ps4 to my headphones.  I have several options but I'm unfamiliar with 5.1 and 7.1 encoding and I suspect that my dac wouldnt be optimal for it.

What I have available are:

Schiit Gungnir
Schiit Asgard2
Homemade Tube amp
ifi mini amp
Grado PS1000
Senn Hd800
V-moda 80s

I've heard that most people hook up optical to a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound receiver, but I don't know if this it necessary/optimal for headphones.  If that is the best way then I would be willing of finding and purchasing one.  I dont have any need of a microphone as I almost exclusively play single player games, just trying to get the most that I can.

Any suggestion or recommendations would be appreciated

Two options I know of for getting headphone surround sound from a PS4.
The Astro mix-amp (optical connection) or a Yamaha A/V receiver (HDMI a little better, but optical still ok).
HDMI can pass full 24-bit/192K 8-channel (7.1) of PCM (uncompressed) digital audio (for modern Blu-ray movie audio)
S/PDIF Toslink optical can carry 6-channels (5.1) of compressed 24-bit/48K of compressed audio (music CDs and DVD movie audio)
