Hey guys! Just a quick question. Would it be better to play a pc game (specifically Counter-Strike: Source) with all video settings maxed out at 1024x768 resolution, or moderate settings at a higher resolution (i.e. 1600x1200 etc.)??

Thanks.

i think i would take higher resolution in CS:S because then you can see more, but in games like Doom 3, HL2, NFSU:2 i would go for more details because it will look so much better. my $0.2

Depends on your monitor. On some monitors 1024x768 is all you need without it looking blocky. However, if you have a monster monitor such as a 21+ inch CRT then 1600x1200 is most desirable for games. I have just compared 1280x1024 on UT2004 with the highest detail setting with 1600x1200 with "high" detail and the latter mode looks better IMO, and runs just as smooth.

Im guessing your computer isnt capable of doing the highest settings on the highest resolution, so i would also use the high resolution so you can see more in first person shooters.

I may just stick with 1024 x 768 res. because, quite frankly, my eyes have gotten used to it and anything above that makes me squint and the text is a bit difficult to read. I like my display big!

I choose resolution SOLELY on refresh rates. I am extremely sensitive to refresh rates, and when I play first person shooters competitively I want at least 100hz, not only for comfort but for fps, the refresh rate caps the fps, and high (if possible, max) fps is important in first person shooters. I can easily tell the difference between 85 and 100, and anything less than 85 is untolerable. On my Dell P991 I use 1024x768 because it is the highest resolution that will support 120hz. I have not been able to tell tell the difference between 120hz and 100hz, but a few months ago I was not able to tell the diference between 100hz and 85hz. Once you get used to high refresh rates, it is very hard to go back.
I guess this is all null on LCDs, but I heard response time (ms) do limit fps. I don't know because I've never owned one.
