I am in need of a small transformer for a NOS DAC. I have been using a single set of secondaries from a torroid, but this is a waste of a set of secondaries. I noticed on Radio Shack's website that they have a small 12.6V 450ma one for about $6, and, most importantly, it is in stock withon walking distance form me. This seems nearly ideal, especially as it saves me from ordering. Of course, Radioshack's reputation preceedes them, so I find myself wondering what the problem with it is? Can anyone give me a reason why this is, or is not, okay to use? What can go wrong with a transformer? Actually, at $6 I'll find out myself, but I am curious to hear opinions.

I've used them, and they are fine. Being EI-core construction, they have a much higher stray magnetic field than toroids, so don't put it near sensitive audio circuitry or wiring.

the thing i like about toroids also is theyre small, im not sure what the situation is stateside, but our shops here carry a fair few transformer options. deciding on a transformer for my tread (for m3) i ended up getting a 30va encapsulated toroid, it was only a few dollars more then the flying lead variant, and that was only a few dollars more then the ei transformer, obviously radioshack doesnt have the same sort of range as somewhere like Altronics, but maybe other local distributors in your area have some other transformers (toroids or regulars) that are cheaper then the head fi norm (amveco's) and dont need you to have to pay for shipping etc??
