Right now for my home rig I have MS1s, and I really love them. For my ipod though, currently I am stuck with Koss "The Plugs". While the bass is not bad, they sound very harsh and tinny. I was wondering if you would recommend sennheiser PX100s or Koss PortaPros as an upgrade for my portable rig. Eventually Ill be building a mint and using the ms1s, but currently the adapter I have to use makes the situation dangerous to my equipment. Im a fan of the grado sound, but ive heard wonderful things about the px100s.

I personally prefer the PX100's. The sound quality comparison between the two will come out close (with the edge to the PX100's IMO) but in the general asthetics and build quality standpoint the PX-100 is the clear winner. Once again IMO.

I'm not saying the PortaPro's are poorly built, just that the PX100's look and feel sturdier in my hands and are more comfortable. That and I prefer their padded headband vs. the dual sliding steel bands of the portapros.

Once again, just one guy's opinion

I say bring your ipod to rat shack and demo their KTX Pro1. Same driver as the KSC and portapro.

IMHO Portapros are better, and they sound huge amped.

In my own perspective once you'll have heard the PX100 (broken in, sorry for the insistence) on your portable, you won't feel like building a portable amp, with all the hassle concerned, anymore.
Provided you don't just hate the Senn. sound signature (it's a fact that a few do -- Grados' guilt

).

A little addition to the recent celebrations of PX100:
To my ears, they are by far the most genuine in sound quality among the current cheaper/portable Senns, take HD497 -- PX100 is the 'closest' to my HD650, basicly the same signature.

Surely just look at the porta pros would make up your mind, what a pair of horrible looking cans

I have a pair of px100s and they run beautifully with my ipod. I really do prefer it with a cMoy inbetween, but it is by no means a requirement.

Well... they're headphone of very different class... and you can hear it but... I must admit that there's something very similar in the sound of the two headphones...

But, Andrea... HD650?!? I remember that you were waiting for the HD595... anyway, good choice. If you can... try an headphone amplifier, the HD650 have great potential that probably you can not hear with the Pioneer A-209R, especially in the highs and detail department. I reccomend also the Cardas upgrade cable, if you can.

quanti italiani!!!!

well I'm a BIG fan of the grado sound and tend to prefer my MS1 with the iPod. I also own a pair of PX100 and they make an incredible combo with the player, but as isolation is the major issue for me, I use them only indoor when I cant take with me the MS1.

"..take HD497" What are you saying? Are PX100 better than HD 497??

I don't have PX100 but my PX200's can't touch the HD497's and I would say the HD497's isolate better..especially when the PX200's don't even cover your ears.

In my opinion the Portapros are better, my sister has the px100s, although you should be happy with both. They are both great cans.

However, I feel the px100s have too much bass (IMO) and I find the Portapros more enjoyable to listen to.

And I don't know what you are all talking about, the Portapros look 100 times cooler than the px100s.

I had the HD497 and I have the PX100: HD497 is more balanced (they are really perfectly balanced), but the sound quality of the PX100 is overall better, specially in the voices, mid-highs, highs and detail aspects IMHO.

Andrea (another one...)
