i think so. i've used my mt831 with the aa extended battery pack only, sans the li-ion inside. it works fine but eats the cell after three or four discs. they have the same power specs so i think battery consumption is same. anyway, it's harmless to the unit.

Don't forget that the AA clip on for the new MT1X0/200 series units must be bought seperately...
Usually, it is recommended NOT to use the single AA without the NiMH inside.

why is that?

the mt831 manual specifically speaks the use of the li-ion inside while using the extended pack. but the stubborn tina likes to rebel and experiment, plus for weight purposes, and it's actually ok. i asked leon about it last time and he said it "may" be fine. anyway, my unit's doing a-okay still

. i think it would be best to just leave the gumstick in there (charged or uncharged) while using the aa. but if you're like me, good luck

.

mystyler, any technical explaination on how it may harm the unit?

No. In fact, I don't remember why I capitalised the "IN"

Re-reading, I think the grammar of that post sucked! I'm an idiot

Anyhow, I use the AA pack without a gumstick every now and then. The AA charges the gumstick a little, which may not be good for it. I don't know. I would assume you can use the AA pack standalone as you always get a quote from the manufacturer about battery life: Gumstick: XX hour. AA: XX hour. Gumstick + AA: XX hour.

does the AA packs on the 180 tend to break?

again i say.. i'll be using that on a long trip to india.. and i really don't want to find myself with no MD (i consider drug related accidents

)) and no option to have a replacement.

Hmm, my DR7 pack is pretty tough. I don't think I can remember anyone on the T-station complaining about them breaking. Don't overtighten it or put much stress on it.. Perhaps you should keep it in a case?

It wouldn't be as sturdy as popping a gumstick into the compartment, but should suffice if you aren't throwing it around in the back of a pack..
