PSP or DS for RPGs

risky? no. as long as you read well and do not improvise. expensive? it can be. I spent over 300 bucks on my rig and ended up selling it for about 180. here is something you left out though: is it easy? sometimes it can be a pain in the ass. certain psx games run better on different firmwares and newer games become unplayable as sony tightens security (ofc they always end up being hacked anyways) also snes games run alright but not full speed. some games have a hard time running well without making drastic graphic and sound compromises. there are a lot of details that go into hacked psps and I did do a whole lot of reading during those days. just a heads up.

rpg availability. ds>psp

I know, I'm saying quantity isn't necessarily as good as quality. You have more choices with the DS, but so many of its killer apps are actually sub-par. (Don't trust reviews or fanboys)

I'm kind of leaning towards the PSP now, because of it's ability to emulate older games well. Is it risky at all or expensive? I've seen some youtube videos of it playing Playstation 1 ROMs as well, and thats a massive library of RPGs. Plus, it seems to have some good games going for it as well as good non-rpg games, metal gear, god of war and such. Is it risky at all or expensive?

Not really risky or expensive. (relatively) The cost of a PSP + 4G Pro Duo isn't that much different than a DS + flashcard + SD card. For the Slim PSPs, I think you need a Pandora battery though, to install custom firmware. (Last I checked) Emulation has gotten better, most 8/16-bit games work fine, except those that originally has special chips (i.e. Megaman X series).

Some of the PSP's games are basically "lite/chopped" versions of its console brethren. Metal Gear Portable Ops is actually pretty bad until the end half (the structure of the game until that point is nothing like the normal MGs), and GoW is fun but has less weapons/magic and is only 4-6 hours long.

I would still say that the ds has the best rpgs if you are talking about ratings. ff3 was amazingly awesome and I had fun with revenant wings as well. but I agree. most of the games out for the ds are pretty gimicky. I am considering repurchasing the ds just for the remake of ff4. I have been ogling that game for a while now.

if patapon part 2 where to show up I would buy a psp in a heartbeat. Im still really sad that I finished the game.... so sad.....

I actually didn't like revenant wings much, it was too easy. FF3 was the opposite, too old-school (little plot, all challenge) for my liking. I'm actually not a fan of the graphical remakes, since they're not that much better (and in some ways worse) than the originals. Why not just play FFIV via emulation?

Ratings aren't important to me anymore. The DS in particular seems to get high scores for almost anything. Too many times I'd see a good review, play the game, only to be greatly disappointed. Where's New Mario Bros 2 or the next 2D Metroid? Why all the overrated shovelware?

They are making patapon two. I got bored with the first, since all you did was hit the same 4-beat over and over. I hope the sequel mixes it up a little.

(I know I sound like game cynic, but I really do enjoy many games, flawed or not)

Patapon started slowly but I was intrigued with its combination of genres. genre blending is rare in the video game industry especially such radical blending and bending... I was fascinated. when you start to get to the end you have several beats to work with and 4 special summoning ones. lots of strategy goes into the game at the end and it was really exciting for me. I love patapon so much. I am glad to hear about part 2.... Ill be buying a psp soon I suppose lol....

and btw ff3 was hard as hell!!!! it brought me back to the days of playing ff on my nes.... oh man I was hooked. I loved that I would actually DIE lol. most of the rpgs nowadays Im surprised if I die during a normal battle. I was playing the last battle and my friend mike was watching. we where both talking strategy through the whole battle. I was down to 2 guys while the other two where dead: one being my tank with two shields (didnt attack just took damage for other party members) and my dragoon. it stood like that for a really long time. dragoon would jump and the viking takes damage. when the viking was low on hp then the dragoon wouldn't jump but gave potion and the viking would still take damage for him until he got to jump again. it was nuts but I finally killed that whore lol. was an awesome final boss!

and how far did you get into revenant wings? it became a bit challenging mid way through it. at least I thought so lol. ZOMG UR A BETTER GAMER.

Maybe I should play it again. I really liked it at first, I'm a fan of rhythm games with unique graphics. But having to keep the same beat over and over drove me to boredom.

Oh yeah. I hated having to grind, and I was so used to console rpgs that the lack of plot and turn-based battle system wore me down. Also, the fact that since there was almost no direction, I'd constantly wander into areas where the enemies would kill me with two one/two hits. And the graphics... were they ugly.

I wasn't that far into the game, I just found the fighting overly simple and repetitive. I kept playing mission after mission, without really giving a crap why. Of course, I didn't like FFXII (PS2) either.

ah. well at least give patapon a real shot. that game deserves it. such an awesome game!

I will. I'm pretty starved for good games at the moment.

Hmm, it seems like they're making Parasite Eve 3rd Birthday and FF Agito XIII for the PSP. Hopefully they'll be better than Crisis Core...

Yeah, it was pretty bland. The new games are using CC's graphical engine (not bad), but hopefully the gameplay won't just be fanboy fodder. I'm not looking forward to Dissidia either, unless it's like a portable smash bros. (With a somewhat decent single-player)

I'd save up for a Fat/Slim PSP with 4gig card.. unless you don't plan on playing ISOs.The fat (original) PSP is easier to install custom firmware, but the slim has more ram meaning (generally) faster load times. If you do buy used, make sure the screen doesn't have too many (or any) dead pixels.
