I have been running my Westone 4R's with the polarity reversed (for an embarrassingly long time) due to an error in the cable manufacturing of a replacement cable. I found this out whilst doing a polarity check:

To correct for this, you reverse the polarity on one of the connectors. (I think that normally there should be a notch in the earphone so that the wire can only be connected in a certain way but certain models, such as my Westone 4R, does not have this)

If you think your 2-pin earphones are lacking in any aspect please double check the polarity using the mono "in phase" and "out of phase" test audio from the audiocheck website. When the cables are joined correctly the "In phase" tones should sound mono whereas there "out of phase" will sound stereo.

I had a feeling something was up with the earphones for a while but could not put my finger on it. It was only when A/B'ing them with my T1 that I noticed something was not right. Music finally sounds how it should again.

The other checks on the http://www.audiocheck.net site are very useful/informative as well
