hi i just got a steven wilson album 5.1  hd flac and just wondering what kind of hardware or software do i need to play this format thanks guys

A DAC capable of 96/24 playback. Even some on-board audio solutions and cellphones are capable of that these days.

Are you using foobar2000?

Your DAC can't downmix the 6 channels itself. Normally windows will downmix for you, but I assume you are using WASAPI or ASIO which bypasses that, so you need to do it with foobar. Add the "Downmix channels to stereo" DSP to the active DSPs chain.
