...I'm planning on using a FiiO BTR3K with my M40x.

I'm going to use a small 2.5mm to 3.5mm adaptor and then a short 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable to connect the BTR3K.

I don't know wether or not I need 3 or 4 pole connectors. I assume 3 pole because the mic is already in the BTR3K, it's not like the mic is in the cable so 4 pole is not needed. Correct?

Thanks.

Yes I think 3 pole
The 2.5 output on the BTR3K is a balanced 4 pole
Not sure about the adapter and cable
Is it 2.5 male - 3.5 female into M40x then 3.5 male - 3.5 male into BTR3K
So you could use a 2.5 male to 3.5male

I did this before with my m40x to make a custom bluetooth headset with my Shanling up4.

You don't need 4 pole for that setup but the mic may be too far away to pick up your voice if you plan on using it for calls. I had mine velcro'd to the side of the earcup.

Yep, the M40x accepts 2.5mm, so I'll get a solid 2.5mm male to 3.5mm female adaptor. Then a short 3.5mm to 3.5mm male to male cable to plug into the BTR3K.

Thanks, for confiming that it's 3 pole I need. Makes sense, all that's going to and from the M40X is the L and R channels, the microphone is internal in the BTR3K so no separate line needed.
