Once you respond to the confirmation e-mail that was sent when you registered for Head-Fi, you will be able to use private messaging.
I just re-sent the activation e-mail to. Please respond to it as indicated in the e-mail (I believe it's just clicking on a confirmatin link in the e-mail).
