I have given up, hp officially sucks. Installing this printer crashed my computer and is now at a standstill. Hp install doesn't detect anything and yet, xp is finding new hardware, how freaking idiotic, words cannot express my rage.

Have you tried manually installing the driver, i.e. directing Windows to the relevant .inf file?

Yes it refuses to do it though, says it does not contain information about my hardware. Why does windows detect it but not hp?

Sounds like either it's a bad driver (check HP forums for any similar complaints) or the chip in the printer has gone bad (this is still under warranty, correct?).

HP drivers suck, plain and simple. They are the fussiest, most annoying set to install, Mac or PC.

I have had similar difficulties with HP printers. Some things to try include disabling any firewall, spyware, etc. apps and try installing in Safe Mode with Networking or dowload the .exe file to your HD and install from your PC. Check the knowledgebase at HP as this likely is not a problem just for you.
