From the more detailed specs, it looks like the the X-Fi *CHIP* can do 44.1 without resampling. However, there is no guarantee that a complete SB branded card with the X-Fi chip will actually do this, especially in WDM / Wave Out mode.
With large amounts of the card dedicated to doing effects / resampling etc, chances are the entire software / hw stack will be focused on doing game effects, and that will be written with 48khz in mind. Hopefully at a minimum the card will be capable of simple 44.1 stereo playback in some mode, whatever 'creation' mode is. If I can get bit-perfect output as well as line-out that has been unsullied by the card resampling it when I'm playing back music, I will be happy.
E-Mu branded X-Fi based cards will be interesting, considering what they've been able to achieve with the older gen chips.
