It's a bit scary reading the tinnitus poll threads here and
the knowledge that it can't be cured..

So, my questions:
A) Is there any way I can make sure that I'm listening
at a safe level other than buying an SPL meter?
If I have to buy an SPL meter, is there an SPL meter that
specifically made to measure headphones db level?

B) I'm currently using Alessandro MS-1 directly plugged into
Chaintech AV-710 soundcard and I set the Windows master
volume control to 50% and the Winamp vol control to 30%,
and I'm listening in my quiet bedroom.
Is this an acceptable level?

Nooooo!! Not that! Horrible fate!

I apparently listen quietly, but also have some random tintinitus. (At the recent Seattle mini-meet, several folks commented, "Could you really hear this?") My doctor says it happens to a lot of people just from ambient noise.

Stress seems to make mine worse. Lucky me.

Our world is so noisy that avoiding tinnitus is llike avoiding a cold.

Do what you can. Use earplugs when around noisy machinery. When in doubt, use earplugs. In a noisy environment, trying to listen to music just means you turn it up louder, so the total noise level goes up. If you ride a motorcycle, use earplugs. In a car, keep the windows closed.
