hey head-fi peeps,
I've been looking for a good solution to get my dusty old records off the ground and working for a living. I'm pretty much set on getting the mmf-5 as I'd like to keep a <$1k budget. What are some reccomended phono stages or preamps or a combination of both that i could DIY or buy for under say $400 that would suit the quality of the mmf5 tt? The tt would connect to the preamp then to my yamaha reciever and to a set of 4.1 speakers which i quite admire or my newly aquired set of HD580's. Oh and thanks for raping my wallet

Sorry Sam I won't be of any help to you, but I thought I would give this a slight bump and say that I'm very interested in hearing people's thoughts on this as I plan on getting a turntable (heavily considering the MMF-5) and my budget for a phono stage is about the same.

try the source forum, you might get a better response there.

For $250 or less you can get the Bellari tube phono stage, with integrated headphone output for your HD-580.
There are cheaper solutions, from Pro-Ject and others for under $100.

If you think headphones are hard on your wallet, run away from analog gear!
