Anyone ever tried to use a pre amp as a headphone amp? Given the small power requirements of headphones I'd think that plugging into the RCA or XLR outs of a preamp would be enough to drive most headphones. Reason I ask is right now I have an Adcom GFP-750 that's for sale but if I plugged into it using XLR I wonder if it would power a pair of Senn HD600s?

I'm sorry I can't give you a technical explanation of why it probably isn't a good idea, but from what I've read over the course of the past year, it will most likely result in very poor sound quality. My guess is that the sound will be very thin......although I'll leave this question for others here who are more technically inclined. Also, unless the Adcom has variable outputs, how will you control the volume?
