I am trying to find out if the SinglePower PPX3 6SN7 is compatible with 5692 tubes. I sent a message to Mikhail yesterday, but I have not heard back yet. Are there any PPX3 6SN7 owners out there who have tried 5692 tubes with success? Any recomendations on specific 5692 tubes?

The definitive 6SN7 thread stated that not all 6SN7 amps are compatible with 5692 tubes.

Thanks

I know, this is a poor help. But I think it is the Supra among the Singlepowers, which is not that well suited for the 5692.

The 5692 will work just fine with the ppx3 or mpx3. As with anything, some people swear by the 5692 red base tubes. I personally find the typical 6sn7gt's to be better sounding to me.

5692 was markted as a 10,000 hour 6SN7, ruggardized for the military with multiple (usually five) support rods. But the reason why it lasts 10,000 hours is it was rated at only 275V and 1.75 watts of plate dissipation, much less then 6SN7 ratings. When 6SN7 electrical specs are applied, the 5692 doesn't last any longer then a 6SN7.

It will run fine in Singlepower amps, including your PPX3.

There's really not variety in way of 5692. CBS/Hytron built one with brown base, and RCA built one with red base. Both are fairly common, with the RCA being the more popular of the two. CBS 5692 usually goes for about $125-150/pr NOS, with the RCA red base at $150-200/pr NOS (vendor pricing). There are a few different vintages and some minor variations and a lot of rebranding. Swedish Standard Electric made a 33S30 which is a 5692 with a few minor alterations. The 33S30 are as rare as tubes come and usually sell for about $600/pr. If you search diligently, you'll see them for sale about once or twice a year. FWIW, not worth the asking price or effort if you ask me.

Be wary: RCA started calling any 6SN7 a 5692 in its later years (for marketing purposes). A 5692 will have brown or red base with many mica support rods. If you see a RCA with black base sold as 5692 .... well, it's not.

Thanks Len for your exhaustive info on the 5692! However, I had this itch in the back of my head that SP Supra and 5692, somehow, were not an optimal combination. Eventually I found this old post by Mikhail.

MPX3 and Supra differences

He is obviously talking about the old-chassis Supra and much water has passed under the bridge since then. Perhaps has he changed the Supra to also accommodate the 5692?

EDIT: Repaired the link
