I haven't been able to listen to headphones regularly for the past six years. Recently I've returned, and wanted to build a PPA v2, only to see the boards are not offered anymore. But then I noticed some very nice PPA's (627/637, built in PSU, par metal case, diamond buffers) offered at ridiculously low prices for sale. (I grabbed one. It sounds wonderful.)

But I was wondering why? I've been away for a while so I can't really tell. Did everyone who wanted a PPA got one already, and no one wants them anymore? Or, are there much better alternatives at lower cost?  Is there a shift towards tube amps?  Do some high-end Chinese products offer better value?  What is it?

For PPA and HD600/650 owners: What are some sub-$500 amps that you find significantly better than the PPA? What do you like about them that you find superior to PPA?
