If I took the headphone out of the PPA and hooked it up to a power amp, how well would this work? How would it compare to a good pre-amp?

Use a stereo rca to 1/4" adapter($2-3) and you can drive the interconnects from the headphone output. This will let you see the result without having to change anything. In fact, if you like the results you can continue to use the ppa in that manner, and simply pull the adapter out when you want to listen to your headphones.

No this won't work, as the topology of the PPA requires the signal ground to be separate from output ground.

Check those threads for more info. Basically, to use the PPA as a preamp you have to add extra line out jacks that are grounded to signal ground rather than output ground.

Glad you mentioned this. I have used every headamp I have owned without preouts this way. I assumed any amp could be used this way. Thanks for the info. I will be more attentive, especially if I ever try a PPA.
