Quake - popularized dueling and clan wars
CounterStrike - biggest FPS to date, most teamwork intensive

Halo 2 - mainly because all my friends play it, so I have a good group of people to frag with. It's a decent game, but I wouldn't say it's the best FPS.
Painkiller - Changed FPS for me. I loved it. It was somewhat a rip of Serious Sam, I suppose, but I never played those. 50+ axe wielding monk demons coming at you is a sight to behold

Half Life - Best. FPS. Evar. Have yet to play the full version of HL2, sadly. But the first one was awesome.
