Yeah. I am terrible at doing mixes. So I don't have one to offer myself. I don't even try. I listen to music on an album to album basis.. I don't even try to do playlists ;p Anyway, the most meaningful mix to me as of late is Neilvg's party mix which at the very least every Bay Area headphone afficionado should be familiar with if not more! (Ori mentioned at the recent K1000 meet he burns in his modded Zhaolus with it ;p). I don't have a track list yet... as I have only recently experienced its power but I have a copy on the way ;p

Anyway, wanna post your mixes? Perhaps explain the them a little or give a bit of background if there is some ;p Explain the track layout ? ;p Does it follow the High Fidelity guidelines.

This thread probably has been done before! Perhaps as of recent. I don't know!

Ok, I'll start this one off. I can't take total credit for it, as it started with a mix of songs that appeared on the show Scrubs. I took it from there and added more songs with the same "feeling" (whatever that means). Anwyay, here goes (in alphabetical order):

Babylon - David Gray
The Beauty of the Rain - Dar Williams
Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol
Collide - Howie Day
Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime - Beck
Eyes - Rogue Wave
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
How to Save a Life - The Fray
In the Sun - Joseph Arthur
Mad World - Michael Andrews
New Slang - The Shins
Overkill - Colin Hay
Over My Head (Cable Car) - The Fray
Please Forgive Me - David Gray
Waiting for My Real Life to Begin - Colin Hay
Walk on the Ocean - Toad the Wet Sprocket
Windmills - Toad the Wet Sprocket
Wonderful - Everclear
World Spins Madly On - The Weepies

07 Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Loom of the Land
08 The God Machine - Seven
09 Down - Jail
10 A Perfect Circle - Renholdër
11 Centaur - In Streams

"brought on by seemingly endless days of below-freezing temperatures on the icy shores of lake erie.."

One of the darker mixes in my collection.

############

"Death Becomes Us" (Nov., 2004)

01 Acid Bath - New Corpse
02 Converge - Fault and Fracture

20 Season to Risk - Scorched

There's just no rest or solace in this one, my idea was that each track pounded you into submission in a different way than the one before.

"Neverending Night" (March 2001)

01 Damon & Naomi w/ Ghost - The Mirror Phase
02 Mojave 3 - All Your Tears
03 Verve - Beautiful Mind
04 Bark Psychosis - Eyes & Smiles
05 Elysian Fields - Parachute
06 Sigur Ros - Olsen Olsen

10 Cocteau Twins - Wolf in the Breast
11 Chapterhouse - Treasure
12 Rain Tree Crow - Every Colour You Are
13 Pale Saints - Neverending Night
14 Slowdive - Dagger

I had just got my first CD burner at the time I made this, so after nearly two decades of doing mix tapes, this was one of my first cd mixes. I basically just tried to make this an intensely beautiful but somber and somewhat dark mix. This is still one of my favorite mixes, probably because I had been planning it for months before I finally had the chance to actually make it.

I've been doing playlists for parties for a couple of years now. When I first heard of playlists I wondered what the problem was that they were attempting to solve. Now I know. Playlists are fun to design; I've done many, in lengths from 40 minutes to 10 hours.

I haven't found any easy way to publish a playlist, though. I've used Windows Media Player, Winamp and Itunes, and they all put obstacles in the way of what should be a simple task. Anyone here know the secret... other than typing it all by hand?

In reality I stay open to all kinds of music. Recently, I've been on a New Age kick. I like classical (Mahler, Shostakovich), indie rawk, "shoegazer", lots of reggae and a splash of jazz.

As for metal, it was my first "big" love in music (after my young years in the 70's listening to disco and the Bee Gees and my mom & dad's country music). Then it was metal.. early 80's stuff.. AC/DC, Maiden, Priest, Ozzy, Scorps, then later I grew tired of all the hair metal and got into thrash and punk.

I probably listen to about 1% of all the metal that's out there, but I focus on the good stuff. My opinion is that people who listen to ONLY one kind of music end up listening to a lot of crap.

As for mix cds, what can I say, it's my favorite way to listen to music. it's like making a sandwich or soup with the right ingredients. There's nothing like a power shift from Helmet to Slayer to Acid Bath. Or from Wilco to Radiohead to Beck. I do still love albums on occasion. But when my listening time seems to be limited to 20 or 30 minute snippets of time, I enjoy filling those times with mixes, my brain craves the variety.

i used to make mixed tapes all the time, and pass copies off to friends... those were the days.

nowadays, i do the same with mixed CDs. last year a friend of mine wanted anthemic Britpop stuff so i duly obliged:

Bong presents: Anthems
A Design For Life - Manic Street Preachers
There Goes The Fear - The Doves
Shining Light - Ash
Everybody's Changing - Keane
We Could be Kings - Gene
Trash - Suede
Teenage Angst - Placebo
Acquiesce - Oasis
M.O.R. - Blur
Pumping On Your Stereo - Supergrass
Leave The All Behind - Ride
High and Dry - Radiohead
Don't Panic - Coldplay
I Am The Resurrection - The Stone Roses
Higher Than The Sun - Primal Scream
Common People - Pulp
Sit Down - James
Turn - Travis
Good Souls - Starsailor

best thing about it was they're all singles save "Acquiesce" which was a b-side but should've been a single in it's own right.

my latest Mixed CD is still untitled, but it's all burned and ready, i just need to think of a title and make the artwork.

Bong presents: For The Night (tentative)
Waiting For The Night - Depeche Mode
High Rising - Suede
Katy Song - Red House Painters
Under Sad Stars - Crooked Fingers
(interlude 1: rainstorm) (i recorded this amazing thunderstorm last year using a condensor mic and my MD and i just had to use it in a mixed CD somewhere)
Crush - Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
The Same Deep Water As You - The Cure
Fripp - Catherine Wheel
Big Sleep - Simple Minds
Miner At The 'Dial-A-View' - Grandaddy
In A Lonely Place - New Order
(interlude 2: ocean waves)
Ocean Rain - Echo And The Bunnymen
Out Of Time - Blur
Today - Ride
When The Sun Hits - Slowdive

i'm really really happy with this mix... it's the first time i'm actually trying to compose a theme, and even a loose storyline; i imagine something like a broken relationship, passing through a long lonely stormy night, and awaiting a new tomorrow... sounds corny, i know but i feel the music flows really nicely. some of the songs i segued/meshed them together very nicely too, aiding the flow of music. it took me months to finalize the tracklisting, and i cut/faded out half of the outro of "Katy Song" to make it all fit.

EDIT: oh, i also made a 3" mixed CD a while ago, called 3 X 3, which was a 3" CD of songs three minutes or less... clever, eh?
smily_headphones1.gif

i'll post the tracklist tonight, if i find it!

i'm afraid i don't really have a wide range of taste in music, so most of my Mixed CDs are filled with the usual suspects. i do dabble in classic Heavy Metal, and the odd Top 40 pop and dance hit but that's about it.

here's one of my favourite Mixed CDs a friend of mine made for me. the "-----" are little snippets of The Simpsons," "Futurama," or various pop-culture soundbites he likes to throw in between for full effect.

-----
Free Language Demons - Rocket From The Crypt
The Rotting Strip - Crooked Fingers
Trying to Forget You - The Sultans
-----
A Diamond is the Devil's Eye - Eric Bachmann
Some Kinda Hate - The mIsfits
White Belt - Rocket From The Crypt
Jet Lag - The Sultans
-----
You Threw A Spark - Crooked Fingers
Iditorod Sled Dogs - Barry Black
All Hail the Black Market - Archers of Loaf
I Burn Today - Frank Black
-----
Motorway To Roswell - The Pixies
-----
The Smoke Off- Shel Silverstein
Smokers in Love - Archers of Loaf
After the Last Laugh - Archers of Loaf
On The Prowl - Rocket From The Crypt
(Whatever Happened to) Pong - Frank Black
Thalassocracy - Frank Black
-----
Golden Throat - Barry Black
Rabid Dog - Barry Black
Testing the Bomb - Shel Silverstein
-----
Bombs Away - Archers of Loaf
