Now that's a cool and off the wall pick. Not really even the best Mekons album, let alone a top 20 all time pick, but still a big favorite of mine too. And that's the value of a thread like this when people have some fun with it. Much more meaningful to me.

Type that title in Google and put Davey after it and one of the first things that pops up is my review of it which reads like this ...

The Mekons - Journey to the End of the Night

Ah, the Mekons. I've been listening to this one a lot lately so thought it might be nice to post a few words about it since it is a favorite. When I wrote the description for my Twilight comp almost three years ago, I remember describing this as being one of those albums that doesn't streak to the top of your best of the year list, but stays in constant rotation throughout the year until you finally realize it is one of your favorites and would be sorely missed if somehow lost. And since then it has probably become even more of a sentimental favorite of mine, one of those rare albums I could listen to most of the day without feeling any overwhelming urge to play something else. Familiar and accessible, but full of spirit and discovery. Populated with real characters, sometimes shadowed in mystery or cloaked in darkness, but living and breathing as their adventures unfold. This is a much more hushed Mekons than in the past. More mature, yet still provocative. One of the main things about it that so endears it to me is the overall flow of both music and ideas. Sometimes the songs seem almost interconnected, though not linearly or literally. Maybe through a recurring melodic fragment or tone or mood. Even in the liner notes the lyrics for each song are tied together with sometimes lengthy narratives. Very nice album, and probably their most vocally rich one yet as well with Neko Case, Edith Frost and Kelly Hogan adding backing vocals behind Sally Timms, Jon Langford, Tom Greenlaugh and Rico Bell.

Not the most 'current' of titles, but here's my faves...

Fleetwood Mac - Tusk. All time all time.
280smile.gif

My Sister Jane - Big Dirt. Just as good.

Anything by Ani DiFranco - I fitted and sold her a pair of hiking boots before anyone 'knew' her.
icon10.gif

Cowboy Junkies - Trinity Sessions

Bruce Cockburn - The Charity of Night

Indigo Girls - Rites of Passage

Damien Rice - O. Damien gave me a free copy at Sundance.
cool.gif

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust. My first album.

Greatful Dead - Dead Set

Martin Sexton - The American

Jewel - Pieces of You. "Discovered" her on cable radio before she went mainstream. Saw her with Edwin Mcain in Salt Lake. Few came to see her as no one knew who she was, yet I was smitten. I tried to hit on her after the show.

Indigenous - Live Blues From the Sky

Kali Dakini - Refuge

And finally...

Led Zepplin - I & II.

Not 20, but to name any more would do an injustice to any of these.

Some nice albums on that list Tirikl. I know you didn't ask, but reading your list I think you would probably really enjoy Over The Rhine. Have you heard that band? A couple years ago they put out a sprawling 2-CD (or gatefold LP) epic with both acoustic and electric sections called Ohio that was easily one of the best of 2003. Karin Bergquist has such a wonderfully expressive voice and you won't find music and lyrics much more compelling than this. Think maybe something along the lines of Fleetwood Mac meets Gram Parsons (or maybe Whiskeytown covering Gram Parsons like they did on that great tribute album from a few years ago that Emmylou Harris put together). The lush sound is a little reminiscent of the Cowboy Junkies or Blue Rodeo. Not as overtly pop sounding as the Fleetwood Mac reference would suggest (nor as dreamy and hedonistic either). Think more "Tusk" than something like "Rumours". Somewhat spiritual. Nicely recorded by Paul Mahern at Echo Park in Bloomington, Indiana on 2" analog tape. Seems like it would fit in well with some of your favorites

So many to choose from, but here are a few of my favourites...

1. Del Amitri - Waking Hours
Just great tunes & some wonderful lyrics
B000026H0V.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

2. Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
Maiden does synth! Stunning "concept" album, no filler whatsoever.
B0000251W3.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

3. Damien Rice - 0
Beautifully crafted, intimate songs, but with a real edge that sets him apart from others in the genre I think.
B0000AXKRB.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

4. Buffalo Tom - Big Red Letter Day
Not generally considered their best album, but I just love it. A bit more tuneful & polished than their other stuff.
B0000018AT.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

5. Fiona Apple - Tidal
What a voice. "Never is a Promise" is a gorgeous song.
B000025KBR.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

6. Counting Crows - August & Everything After
Everyone knows this one, but for a good reason

.
B000003TAP.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

7. Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque
Lush guitar pop with gorgeous melodies. The closing instrumental track just sums up this album for me.
B000024TV6.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

8. The Prodigy - Fat of the Land
Funky, powerful electronica. "Diesel Power" for the win!
B000006TNS.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

9. EMF - Schubert Dip
Nearly 15 years old but this still sounds fresh. Shame they didn't last very long.
B000007MVQ.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

10. Tori Amos - From the Choirgirl Hotel
A powerful sound on this Tori album. "Spark" & "Raspberry Swirl" are superb demo tracks.
B0000062S6.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

11. Getz/Gilberto Vol 1
Just a great, fun, light jazz album.
B0000047CX.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

12. Van Morrison - Moondance
Simply beautiful & my favourite VM album.
B000002KHF.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Pretty mental in places, really inventive & grand pop songs. Highlights are "Barney & Me" and "Lazarous".
B0000240JU.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

14. Weezer - Weezer
Poppy nerd-rock. Great stuff!
B000003TAW.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Slightly offbeat delivery but with lovely tunes & dreamy guitars
Blue-Aeroplanes-Swagger-290539.jpg

16. Supergrass - I should Coco
Funny as hell & a great summer soundtrack.
B000002TXE.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

17. Pearl Jam - Ten
Tough decision between this & Nevermind by Nirvana, but Ten just swings it for me. Quintissential grunge.
B000005RUX.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

18. Terence Trent D'Arby - Symphony Or Damn
Beautiful, inventive songs & a great recording.
B000025MHW.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

19. 10,000 Maniacs - Our Time In Eden
Natalie Merchant's last album with them & definitely their best.
B000002HBI.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

20. Ben Folds - Songs For Silverman
Had to inlcude this one as it's pretty much on repeat in my car at the moment. I love all his stuff & I reckon this is one of his best.
