Hello
Just curious what gain settings Portaphile V2 owners have their amps set to in order to drive their headphones. Standard settings are 3, 5, 7, & 11.
Thanks!
Nikolaus

Gain less than 3 is for low impedance phones (16, 27 ohms), over 3 is for higher impedance phones. Gain 5 to 7 usually are used for Senns. You want low gain in low impedance phones so when you put up the volume, the amp doesnt go very high, volume wise.

Mine is set to 3. I'm a low volume listener. It's usually at 11:00 position with my hd580. 1:00 is too loud for comfort to me, so there's no point in having a bigger gain.

Cesar set the gain on mine to either 5 or 7 (not sure exactly which setting) for my 555s. I just told him to use his better judgement, knowing the headphones I was using. I ususally run the amp straight up (12 o'clock).

i'd be running shure e3 (16ohms @ ~115spl/mw) and sony d66 eggos (40ohms @ ~100 spl/mw) and might be venturing into the world of ultrasone hfi-650 trackmaster (74ohms @ ~100spl/mw) or beyer dt-660 (32ohms @ ~100spl/mw). i'm looking for a gain setting that'll be a good all around setting for this range of headphones. so, i'm trying to decide between 3 or 5. any advice based upon those headphones?
thanks!

My advice is to explain all of that to Cesar when you are ready to buy the Portaphile. He's a great guy to work with and will be more than happy to help you decide on the gain setting on your amp.

When I ordered a Portaphile from Cesar, he suggested a gain of 5 for me. I currently have Grado's, but I explained to him that in the future who know what I will end up with. It is a very sweet amp and Cesar is great to work with.
